Michaela "Mikki" McKenzie

At the intersection of passion, dedication, and artistic brilliance stands Michaela "Mikki" McKenzie, a 21-year-old dance virtuoso hailing from Montgomery, Alabama. Currently navigating her senior year at Alabama State University, Mikki is on the cusp of earning her coveted Bachelor's in Fine Arts with a major in dance, marking the culmination of a journey that began at the tender age of 5.The foundations of Mikki's technical prowess were laid at Carver Elementary Arts & Magnet School in Montgomery, under the tutelage of Mrs. Linda Moore. As the years unfolded, her journey led her through Baldwin Middle Magnet School and Booker T. Washington Magnet High School, shaping her into a multifaceted dancer proficient in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, African, and Hip Hop.Mikki's insatiable thirst for knowledge and mastery led her to collaborate with esteemed institutions and mentors. She received training and worked with Symphony Q Academy of Dance, Alabama Contemporary Ballet Theatre, MGM Dance Works, Nathan Trice, Nobis Licea, the Arts Council of Montgomery, the Tonea Stewart Performing Arts Camps, Brenau University, and the Ballet Hartford. These experiences not only refined her technical skills but also exposed her to a diverse range of dance styles and philosophies.Beyond being an performer, Mikki's artistic journey extends to choreography. She has lent her creative vision to elementary, middle, and high school show choirs, musical theater ensembles, and dance departments such as Baldwin Middle Arts and Academic Magnet School, Booker T.Washington Magnet High School, Carver Elementary Arts and Magnet School, . Her ability to craft compelling narratives through movement has garnered acclaim and left an indelible mark on the local dance scene.   In the summer of 2022, Mikki's talents took center stage as she had the privilege of performing in the World Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies alongside luminaries such as Sheila E., Yolanda Adams, Tony Toni Tone, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Ruben Studdard, and Pastor Mike Jr. This experience not only showcased Mikki's versatility but also solidified her presence on a global stage.Mikki's artistic endeavors transcend the traditional stage, delving into the realms of dance on film and theatrical works. Her creations have captivated audiences globally, earning recognition in various film festival showings. In recognition of her burgeoning talent, Mikki was awarded an artistic fellowship with the Wideman Davis Dance Company, providing her with invaluable insights and mentorship. Adding another feather to her cap, Mikki ventured into the world of literature. In the summer of 2023, she became a newly published author with the release of two books: "Chocolate Hearts: A Collection of Short Stories About Black Love" and "Not You Reading My Diary!: A Book of Black Girl Emotions In Rhyme." This foray into writing reflects Mikki's commitment to exploring the nuances of Black experiences through multiple artistic mediums.During her tenure at Alabama State University, Mikki's exceptional talent did not go unnoticed. Renowned choreographers and professors such as James Atkinson Jr., Jerome Stigler, Lenard Foust, Rodni Williams, Nathan Trice, and Nobis Licea selected her for their dance works. These collaborations have spanned classical ballet, modern dance, and even the dynamic realm of dance on film.As Mikki stands at the threshold of graduation, her journey through the world of dance remains an inspiring narrative of resilience, creativity, and unwavering passion. With a future that promises continued innovation and artistic exploration, Michaela "Mikki" McKenzie is poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of dance and beyond
